Why not get your whole school active with a challenge
Your school can take part in various active travel challenges throughout the year, check out the following challenges that happen annually which you or your school can easily get involved in.
In Spring, Sustrans run the largest inter-schooling cycling and scooting challenge, The Big Pedal. In May, Living Streets hold Walk to School Week, the centrepiece of National Walking Month in May. October is International Walk to School Month, an opportunity for pupils to join hundreds of thousands of children across the globe celebrating the walk to school.
A list of upcoming active challenges and events is shown lower down the page. Or you could take part in one of the challenges that run throughout the year and see how getting more active on a daily basis can make you happier and healthier.
WOW the year-round walk to school challenge
Pupils record how they get to school on the WOW Travel Tracker and those who walk once per week for a month are rewarded with a themed badge. It’s simple to run, fun and easy to take part. Just a few minutes of a school’s day is all it takes to make a big difference. WOW will help develop healthy lifelong habits.
The Daily Mile
The aim of the Daily Mile is to improve the physical, social, emotional and mental health and wellbeing of our children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.
The Daily Mile is a social activity, where the children run or jog – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends.
It is a simple but effective concept, which any primary or nursery school can implement free of charge and without the need for staff training. Its impact can be transformational – improving not only the children’s fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behaviour and general wellbeing.
