Redways

MKs traffic-free routes

Milton Keynes has over 200 miles of shared-use paths, known as Redways. The traffic-free network covers most of the city estates with some Redways extending out to connect to the older towns. A complete map of the Redway network can be seen on our interactive map.   Or you can download the Redway Map in full.

Redway Super Routes

A network of 13 Super Routes criss-cross the city creating direct routes for cycle commuters. These routes closely follow the grid roads and link residential areas to key destinations such as employment areas, train stations and CMK. A scheme of investment is currently under way to improve and enhance these routes. More details and updates are on the Super Routes page.

The Redway Code – Respect, Protect, Enjoy

The Redways are an important part of Milton Keynes. They are shared-use routes for people walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting (including powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters). Delivery robots also use the Redways. The traffic-free network is popular for leisure, commuting and for staying active. To enjoy them, please follow these common sense guidelines.

Respect other people

  • Be polite and courteous. Consider the needs of others.
  • Where ever possible, cycle on the left, walk on the right. Don’t change direction suddenly and signal clearly while cycling.
  • Take care when passing other people, slow down, allow plenty of room and use a polite audible method to signal your approach.
  • Slow down at bends and all junctions and be prepared to stop when necessary.
  • Only walk or cycle two abreast. Don’t obstruct the Redway or stand in groups; allow others to pass quickly and easily.
  • Don’t use your mobile phone. It’s safer to be aware of your surroundings especially of people approaching from behind.
  • If you need to cross a redway in a vehicle e.g. to reach a private driveway, drivers should give way to pedestrians and cyclists. (Highway Code Rule 206)

Protect the environment

  • Take your litter home.
  • Keep dogs under control, preferably on a short lead.
  • Always clean up after your dog and get rid of mess responsibly.
  • Report problems on the redways – glass, potholes, lighting and vegetation to MK Highways.

Enjoy the outdoors

  • Follow the guidelines and the Highway Code.
  • Be responsible for your own safety and others in your care.
  • Plan your route in advance.
  • Horse-riding is permitted on redways, which are part of the bridleway network.

Helpful advice: Young people and others may want to consider wearing a helmet while cycling. At night, wearing reflective, hi-viz or light coloured clothing will help you be seen. See our safety tips for more information.

Redways and the law

  • Electric cycles which meet the EAPC Regulations 2015 are permitted to use Redways.
  • As Public Highway, all legal requirements and the Highway Code are applicable to the Redways: cycles should be road worthy and able to stop in an emergency; cycle lights are required at night. (H.C. Rules for cyclists 59-82)
  • All motor-powered vehicles including mopeds, mini-motos and motorcycles are prohibited from using Redways with the exception of authorised vehicles e.g. emergency vehicles and maintenance vehicles.
  • Away from the Redways; pavements and footways are for pedestrians only. Cycling on the pavement is an offence which carries a fine of £500.
