Commuting

Change your commute to be more sustainable

Transform your daily commute

“I don’t have time”, “It’s too far”, “I’ve got to pick the kids up after school”, “I didn’t know…” – just some of the reasons why people commute by car instead of using sustainable transport. But now we’re here to help you explore all of the travel choices that are available to you in Milton Keynes. You could even save money, get fitter and make some friends along the way.

Our journey planner will help you plan your commute and give you a number of travel options, then it’s just down to you to pick which one works best for you. We provide lots of other tips and information throughout these pages to get you started.

Don’t travel

It’s the simplest, cheapest, quickest, greenest and easiest solution to commuting – don’t do it. Or at least, reduce the number of times you have to do it. Many companies around the world are adopting new working practices and getting rid of the out-dated “Monday to Friday, 9-5 routine”. Agile and Flexi working have huge benefits for both employer and employee. Get started using our Get Connected pages.

Active Travel

Did you know that around 40% of all journeys to work in Milton Keynes are less than five kilometres/3 miles in length? These journeys could easily be made by cycling or walking. This is a great way to fit exercise in to your day – why drive to the gym at lunchtime and spend 30 minutes on the running machine when you could cycle to work instead?

There are lots of other ways to fit more walking into your working  day. We’ve got lots of information to help you start cycling your daily commute including getting a bike, choosing a route and parking it securely.

Public Transport

Choosing to use more public transport is great for our environment and can be better for your wallet and your health. Letting somebody else do the driving takes the stress out of your commute and you don’t have to worry about finding a parking space. More people using the bus reduces pollution and congestion too!

Find more information about bus and train routes, tickets and prices on our Get on Board pages.

Car & Journey Sharing

If you live too far away to travel actively, you could try car sharing. Car sharing is a great alternative to travelling alone,  saves money on parking and has prime location car share parking bays across CMK.

Learn more about sharing your journey, the benefits and savings of sharing and how you can find a suitable journey share partner on our Get Sharing pages.

Becoming a sustainable organisation

If you are a Milton Keynes organisation there is support and help for your business to promote and encourage sustainable and active travel to your workplace. Milton Keynes Council uses the nationwide Modeshift STARSfor (Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition Scheme) to recognise local businesses for excellence in supporting the use of cycling, walking and sustainable travel through the delivery of effective Travel Plans.
