Join the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge.
Sustrans Big Pedal is back but it’s got a new name. The Big Walk and Wheel it is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge.
The aim of the Big Walk and Wheel is that it inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose from a range of active modes for their journey to school.
This year’s challenge will run from 20-31 March 2023. It is free to enter for all schools in the UK, including SEN schools, and there are fantastic prizes to be won each day. Participating in the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel also contributes towards gaining Modeshift Stars accreditation.
When you register and log data you will be entered into a draw to receive a free access to Living Streets Travel Tracker!

How does the Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel challenge work?
On each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils walking, using a wheelchair, scooting or cycling to school.
A school’s best five days will determine their final position and schools at the top of their leaderboards will receive an exclusive Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel certificate.
In 2022, pupils at 1,519 schools made 2,096,336 journeys to school by foot, wheelchair, scooter and cycle.
All schools will be entered into daily prize draws for rewards if over 15% of your school takes part on each day of the challenge. Prizes up for grabs include accessories and equipment to help your school travel actively.
